<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Digital Humanities Start Up Grants</span></strong><strong> (National Endowment for the Humanities)<br />
</strong>Proposals should be for the planning or initial stages of digital initiatives in any area of the humanities. Grants may involve research that brings new approaches or documents best practices in the study of the digital humanities; planning and developing prototypes of new digital tools for preserving, analyzing, and making accessible digital resources, including libraries’ and museums’ digital assets; scholarship or studies that examine the philosophical or practical implications and impact of the use of emerging technologies in specific fields or disciplines of the humanities, or in interdisciplinary collaborations involving several fields or disciplines;<em> innovative uses of technology for public programming and education utilizing both traditional and new media; and new digital modes of publication t</em>hat facilitate the dissemination of humanities scholarship in advanced academic as well as informal or formal educational settings at all academic levels. <em>Innovation is a hallmark of this grant category.</em> All applicants must propose an innovative approach, method, tool, or idea that has not been used before in the humanities. grant competition to assist <em>Appalachian communities</em> in leveraging renewable-energy and energy-efficiency resources to revitalize their communities.<br />
AMOUNT:  up to $75,000 (8 to 10 awards for a total of $545,000)<br />

<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Pre-Disaster Mitigation Program<br />
</strong></span>This is a competitive program that provides funds to states and communities for hazard mitigation planning and implementation of mitigation projects prior to a disaster.  Examples of eligible activities include:  elevation of existing public or private structures, localized flood control projects that are designed to protect critical facilities, relocation of public or private structures, vegetation management for natural dune restoration, wildfire or snow avalanche, storm water management projects, construction of safe rooms for public structures.<br />
