The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce the availability of Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds for a special grant program entitled “Growing Community – the Library Food Garden”.

This special grant program was developed in recognition of the 2010 National Library Week theme, “Communities Thrive @ Your Library”, and the water theme of the 2010 Summer Reading Program. Growing Community encourages libraries to partner with other community entities to establish food gardens on library or school property, or other public land, during the 2010 growing season.

In order to be funded projects must demonstrate community partnerships as well as include library-based activities in the areas of Health and nutrition, Sustainability and ecology and/or Hunger/poverty issues.

Funds may be used to purchase seeds and plants, gardening tools and supplies, copies of materials and titles on gardening in various formats, marketing and promotion of the program, and speaker fees and other costs associated with program activities.

All types of libraries are eligible for this grant program which has a federal request limit of $7,500. A local cash match of 25% of the total project cost is required.

Electronic proposals are due at the State Library midnight on March 1, 2010. Approved proposals will run from May 1, 2010 through September 30, 2010.

The Request for Proposal can be found on WebJunction Ohio at http://oh.webjunction.org/ohlstaspecial.

If you have any questions about this grant program, please contact Janet Ingraham-Dwyer at jdwyer@sloma.state.oh.us, 800-686-1532 or 614-644-6910 or Missy Lodge at mlodge@sloma.state.oh.us, 614-644-6914 or 800-686-1532.

(Deadline: None) The Ben & Jerry Foundation, the philanthropic initiative of the ice cream maker, will consider any type of proposal, as long as the goal is to create societal, institutional and/or environmental change.

The foundation funds efforts that address the root causes of a problem in a community, system or institution. Therefore, traditional social service programs are ineligible for funding. Funded programs seek to empower segments of society, such as immigrant, rural or homeless populations.

The initial application consists of a one-page letter of interest, which may be submitted at any time and are reviewed on an ongoing basis. The review may take up to eight weeks.

If an application is chosen for further consideration, the organization will be invited to submit a full proposal which consists of a five-page application. Those seeking less than $1,000 don’t have to submit a full proposal, because the decision will be based on the letter of interest.

Insider’s Tip: The foundation’s website provides the following four tips that are helpful for all types of funding.

· Carefully consider the foundation’s guidelines to ensure there is a good fit between your work and their funding criteria (Don’t bother to apply if there isn’t).
* Be explicit (Don’t assume the reader is familiar with the issues you address).
* Provide examples of outcomes and impacts of your work.
* Be succinct and detailed.
* Although this may seem obvious, be sure to fulfill all stated application requirements.

Info: For more on the foundation, please visit http://www.benjerry.com/company/foundation/.

Beginning January 2, 2010, HomeworkNow (www.homeworknow.org) and ReadThisNow (www.readthisnow.org) will both be re-directing to KnowItNow24×7 at http://www.knowitnow.org as the new one-stop-shop for Ohio’s statewide virtual reference service.

Both HomeworkNow and ReadThisNow have always been a part of KnowItNow24×7, and this consolidation will allow for easier access to our service by patrons, more streamlined marketing by libraries, and other benefits. KnowItNow24×7 is funded by an LSTA grant awarded by the State Library of Ohio and is made freely available to all residents of the state.

Patrons will continue to get help from librarians, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, in finding resources for doing homework, suggestions for good books to read, and answers to questions for their general curiosity.

As part of the consolidation, we will also be unveiling new logos and icons for KnowItNow24×7 and links to these for school and library websites will be posted online. Updates on this will be forthcoming.

If you have any questions about this change, please feel free to contact Don Boozer, KnowItNow24×7 Coordinator, at support@knowitnow.org.

It’s time to start thinking about E-rate applications for the coming year, beginning with your technology plan. A technology plan is required before requesting and receiving E-rate discounts on all services other than basic telephone service.

The basic requirements for a technology plan are as follows:
* It must be written before the Form 470 is filed.
* It must cover all 12 months of the funding year for which discounts are being requested.
* It must contain all five required elements.
* It must be approved by the State Library of Ohio before the Form 486 is filed or services start, whichever is earlier.
* In general, it cannot cover more than three years.

The State Library is hosting a webinar this Thursday, 10/22 at 3:30, featuring Kendra Morgan, TechAtlas Project Coordinator at WebJunction, who will guide participants step-by-step through the process of using TechAtlas to create an appropriate technology plan.

Then next week, on Wednesday 10/28 beginning at 9:30, Lorrie Germann from eTech Ohio, our E-rate consultant, will lead a day-long workshop on creating the Form 470. This will be followed by another workshop on Monday 12/14 on creating the Form 471, the last step in the process of applying for E-rate approval.
