I hope to have quick reference information for librarians, trustees and everyone else. Hopefully it will be helpful with marketing, fundraising and grant seeking. If nothing else it’s nice to have numbers behind what we already know – that Kansas’ libraries are second to none and our patrons know it.

It is a work in progress, as I only have public library stats up so far. I will be putting information on academic libraries soon. If anyone knows of a good source for school libraries, or if you have any other suggestions, I woud appreciate it.

Thanks,

Peter Haxton, State Data Center Coordinator

TO: Kansas librarians and trustees

FROM: Shannon Roy, Continuing Education Coordinator, State Library of Kansas

Libraries that have trustees as well as staff headed to the 2008 Kansas Library Conference should be aware of some very interesting programs that address library issues that fall under the core skills for library trustees. Trustees may enroll in the Kansas Library Trustee Certification Program and send Credit Request Forms for Certification Training at any time. Copies of both forms will be widely available at Trustee/Friends Day Programs. Copies of Reaching for Excellence: The Kansas Library Trustee Certification Program will also be available at Trustee/Friends Day. That program may also be found at:

http://www.skyways.org/KSL/development/trusteecertification.pdf

The workshops listed below are not necessarily the only programs that would meet trustee needs and qualify in the trustee core skill categories. But trustees should be aware that only workshops and topic programs will qualify for certification credit. Informal discussions, celebration luncheons and business meetings, although very important and sometimes quite enlightening, do not qualify for trustee certification credit. The Conference Program hotlinks may be found at

State Library Continuing Education Coordinator, Shannon Roy says, “The Kansas Library Trustee Association Board and Kansas public library directors are all very interested in helping trustees gain the skills and knowledge that will help them be effective library board members. Trustees who take the time from their own careers and personal commitments to study Kansas library issues deserve to be recognized for their strong support of Kansas public libraries. The ultimate goal is for Kansas to have public libraries that give excellent service to their communities.” For more information about the certification program, see Kansas Libraries

Other resources available on WJKS include a training package focused on core skills for trustees, Trustee Topics and board meeting training modules developed by the Kansas Library Trustee Association (KLTA).

Visit these resources and use them to encourage your library trustees to Reach for Excellence.
