National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from mid-September to mid-October. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it celebrates “the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.” Indiana has experienced an increase in those who identify themselves as Hispanic/Latino (of any race), with 214,536 citizens at the 2000 Census and an estimated 299,398 at the time of the 2006 American Community Survey. As we all continue to provide outreach to Spanish-speaking patrons, take a look at the links below for more information and resources.

ERIC DOCUMENTS
Have you heard about ERIC? The Education Resources Information Center website is provided by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education. If you are searching for information on education in the U.S., remember to turn to ERIC. You can search by Keyword(s), Title, Author, Descriptor, and ERIC document number. A search will display full citations to education-related journal articles, books, conference papers, technical reports, and more. For most items, the ERIC document number will be listed to the right of the title, in parentheses. Click the title for the full record. The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors online, “a controlled vocabulary – a carefully selected list of education-related words and phrases assigned to ERIC records to organize them by subject,” will make your ERIC searching more efficient. See also ERIC – Information for Librarians.
You and your patrons can access ERIC documents in PDF full text via the website (see Advanced Search); from the original publishing entity (see Source or Publisher information); or on microfiche at many libraries in Indiana. The Indiana State Library’s collection of ERIC microfiche covers 1973 to 2003 and is organized by document number.

NATIONAL ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH
September 2008 has been declared National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. This year’s theme is “Join the voices for recovery: Real people, real recovery.” A Proclamation issued by the White House in August lays out the goals of the Campaign – drug and alcohol addiction prevention and recognition of those who have been able to overcome it. The Department of Health and Human Services stresses the importance of recognizing organizations and treatment centers that strive to help those with these addictions. Not only do such programs aid individuals and families, but they also benefit society as a whole.
Kits for promoting alcohol and drug addiction recovery recognition are available for download at Recovery Month.gov.

NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY: September 27, 2008
According to the NHFD website, “Indiana’s 822,000 hunters and anglers are among the most prominent and influential of all demographic groups, spending more than $1 billion a year on hunting and fishing, according to a new report.” The report, “Hunting and Fishing: Bright Stars of the American Economy ~ A force as big as all outdoors,” was produced by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation with support from the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, National Marine Manufacturers Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation and SCI – First For Hunters. The report uses the results from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation and statistics provided by the American Sportfishing Association and Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
National Hunting and Fishing Day began as a way to help support conservation and wildlife management by promoting a sport that is often overlooked and ignored. Take advantage of beautiful autumn days by hunting or fishing in Indiana’s many beautiful parks and reservoirs. Several Indiana DNR fish-and-wildlife areas and reservoir properties will celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day on Sept. 20 or 27.
Do you know when it’s safe to fish? When it’s safe to hunt turkey or deer? Please check out the Department of Natural Resources Hunting and Trapping Guide for more information. Not sure where the fish are biting or where to find the most deer? Indiana DNR can help with this as well. Check your gear; get out there; and have a great adventure. Please remember to do it safely. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has plenty of information and classes to help you plan for your fishing and hunting adventures.
