The colorful, award-winning “Drawn to Reading” bookmarks drawn from the imagination of young Hoosiers are back! The innovative “Drawn to Reading” program has once again donated thousands of bookmarks to the Indiana State Library for distribution around the state. This year’s collection consists of several different and colorful bookmarks which are available for free to libraries statewide.
The “Drawn to Reading” program is a service-learning project designed to promote literacy. This year, the program is a collaborative effort between third grade students at Sutton Elementary School in Muncie, who create the artwork, and Ball State University students, who digitize the artwork. The bookmarks are available for free thanks to MAN Roland, Inc., who print the bookmarks at no cost to the program.
The outstanding nature of this project was recognized with the National Innovation in Higher Education Award from the Electronic Document Systems Foundation (EDSF) in 2006. Hans Kellogg, an assistant professor of industry and technology, has taught at Ball State for 13 years and started the reading program in 2001.
The State Library will distribute packs of bookmarks to each public library district. School media centers should contact Drew Griffis at agriffis@library.IN.gov to obtain bookmarks for distribution at your school.
Additional bookmarks will be distributed as they are available on a first come, first serve basis. The State Library will notify libraries via the Wednesday Word when and if additional bookmarks are available.
BANNED BOOKS WEEK RESOURCES AVAILABLE ONLINE FROM ALA
Information based on an American Library Association news release:
Banned Books Week (BBW), an annual ALA event reminding Americans not to take the freedom to read for granted, will be observed during the last week of September this year (September 27 through October 4). Observed since 1982, BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them. ALA believes that intellectual freedom can exist only where these two essential conditions are met.
BBW is sponsored by the American Booksellers Association, American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, American Library Association, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Association of American Publishers, National Association of College Stores, and is endorsed by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.
BBW promotional items—such as the BBW Kit—are available for purchase through the ALA Store.
ALA also provides the following resources to help you explore Banned Books Week further:
- Banned Books Week events
