The Wednesday Word: News from the Indiana State Library
DRAWN TO READING BOOKMARKS AVAILABLE TO INDIANA LIBRARIES
By Dawn Lipp (dlipp@statelib.lib.in.us)
They’re back! Those colorful, award-winning bookmarks drawn from the imagination of young Hoosiers. The innovative “Drawn to Reading” program has once again donated thousands of bookmarks to the Indiana State Library for distribution around the state. This year’s collection consists of over a dozen different and colorful bookmarks which are available for free to libraries statewide.
The “Drawn to Reading” program is a service-learning project designed to promote literacy. The program is a collaborative effort between Muncie elementary school students, who create the artwork, and Ball State University students, who digitize the artwork. The bookmarks are available for free thanks to MAN Roland, Inc., who print the bookmarks at no cost to the program.
The outstanding nature of this project was recognized last year with the national Innovation in Higher Education award from the Electronic Document Systems Foundation (EDSF). Hans Kellogg, an assistant professor of industry and technology, has taught at Ball State for 11 years and started the reading program five years ago. For more information on the program, contact Kellogg at hkellogg@bsu.edu or (765) 285-5663.
