The Illinois State Library will host the Medical Library Association’s educational Webinar entitled, Connecting E-science and Team Science: The Changing Nature of Research on November 18 from 1:00–2:30 p.m CST.

There will be opportunities for discussion before the Webinar from 12:30–1:00 p.m. and after from 2:30–3:30 p.m.

Try-It! Illinois Returns

The Illinois State Library has announced the 12th annual Try-It! Illinois. The statewide database trial will be available October 1 through November 30, 2011.

Try-It! Illinois offers the staffs and library users of the more than 5,000 ILLINET member libraries the opportunity to survey and evaluate a wide variety of electronic resources. Thanks to partnerships between the Illinois State Library and the participating electronic resource vendors, there is no charge for accessing these databases during Try-It! Illinois.

You will need a login and password to access Try-it! Illinois. Libraries are encouraged to share the Try-It! Illinois login and password with their library users, and provide them an opportunity to use and recommend electronic resources for possible purchase at the local level.

Please do not post the Try-It! Illinois login and password on the Internet or in publicly archived electronic newsletters. This is vital to the success of the trial and to maintaining the relationships that have been established with vendors.

Illinois Library Association is considering a new membership category for ISLMA and SLA-IL members

One of three proposals made by Illinois Library Assocation (ILA) President Gail Bush includes adding a new membership category for current Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) and Special Libraries Association-Illinois (SLA-IL) members.

The new membership category would feature an annual rate of just $25 and would be available to current ISLMA and SLA-IL members for five years. After the five-year time period, members would then join ILA at the full personal rate.

The proposal to create the new membership category requires a change to ILA bylaws and must first be approved by two-thirds of the personal members present and voting at the 2011 ILA Annual Conference Membership Meeting on Thursday October 20th.

This one day conference geared towards Special Librarians, takes place on Friday, November 6, 2009 at the MLS Burr Ridge office.

Anne Caputo, SLA President Elect will speak along with others on topics ranging from facilitating and incorporating creativity into your work, creative marketing, and use of tools and resources. LSTA Grant Update: Digitization of The Sentinal

Thanks to a generous grant from the Illinois State Library, the Asher Library of Spertus Institute has digitized more than 2000 issues of The Sentinel, a long-running Jewish weekly published in Chicago. The project focused on the years 1911-1949, a span which includes the Depression and two world wars. The Sentinel was an important source of news –international, national and local–for the Jewish community, and remains a vital research tool.

The Sentinel issues will be available as searchable PDF files through the Illinois Digital Archive and through the Spertus website. The periodical will be part of the new Gateway to Asher Library Digital Collections, to be launched in January 2009. Spertus Institute is grateful to the Illinois State Library for funding the digitization of this important resource.

New Special Libraries Association Research Grant

The Special Libraries Association (SLA) is offering a new SLA Research Grant supporting two types of proposals: research projects focused on the needs and concerns of information professionals in special libraries and related venues and projects which directly benefit the operations of SLA and its units by furthering the scientific, literary, and educational purpose for which the association is organized and operated.
