The Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) recently released its new resource sharing platform, OCLC WorldShare Interlibrary Loan, to replace OCLC Resource Sharing. Between now and December 31, both WorldCat Resource Sharing and WorldShare Interlibrary Loan will function in parallel. Attendance … Continue reading →

Attendance at an online training session will precede a library’s transition to the WorldShare platform.

As was announced earlier, many Illinois libraries are scheduled to transition and receive WorldShare training in September and October. However, some schedule changes will impact libraries that are members of regional library system consortial catalogs. Specifically, consortial catalog members in the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS) will begin the WorldShare migration in May. Members of the Illinois Heartland Library System (IHLS) consortial catalog will start their training in late August.

Here are two steps that will help prepare all Illinois OCLC libraries for the migration to WorldShare:

Make sure that your library’s constant data records are accurate and updated with the correct address fields. Here is a link to a brief tutorial from OCLC on Constant Data Record Updating. http://oc.lc/cU4q23

Review the data in your library’s OCLC Policy Directory. If you have not set up your policies now is the time to do so. If it has been awhile since you have looked at the Policy Directory, now is the time to review the information to be sure it still accurately reflects what you do. Here is a link to the OCLC Policies Directory Quick Reference guide that will help you in updating the Policy Directory.

The WorldCat Resource Sharing interlibrary loan service received through the Illinois statewide OCLC contract will be replaced this year by a new service, OCLC WorldShare™ Interlibrary Loan. WorldShare™ Interlibrary Loan will deliver new and expanded functionality that supports evolving workflow changes, such as the option to purchase instead of borrow needed materials.

The service’s interoperation with other applications, such as the display of lender costs from the OCLC Policies Directory and display of item availability from a library’s ILS, will be supported by the new WorldShare Platform.

Initial release of the new service is planned for this March. Between March and December 2013, the WorldCat Resource Sharing and WorldShare Interlibrary Loan services will function in parallel. Access to WorldCat Resource Sharing is scheduled to end December 31, 2013.

Illinois libraries are scheduled to transition to WorldShare Interlibrary Loan in September and October 2013. There are some things libraries can do now to begin preparations for your library’s move to WorldShare Interlibrary loan later this year. Suggestions for advance preparation are outlined on the migration website.

If you have questions about the upcoming migration, please contact Jimmy Kuckelheim at OCLC.

OCLC, Inc. has been awarded the contract for Resource Discovery and Sharing for Illinois Libraries (i.e., discovery, cataloging and interlibrary loan services) as a result of a formal Request for Proposal process conducted by the Office of the Secretary of State. Beginning this week, pricing information for ILLINET/OCLC Services for FY12 (July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012) and FY13 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013) is being distributed by the State Library to all Illinois OCLC member libraries. Pricing for FY13 will remain the same as FY12.

Beginning in FY12, billing services for ILLINET/OCLC Services will be performed by the new Illinois Heartland Library System (created from the merger of Lincoln Trail, Lewis and Clark, Rolling Prairie and Shawnee Library Systems). FY12 contracts and invoices will be sent under separate cover after the pricing notification is distributed; the contracts will be issued from the Illinois State Library, and the invoices from the Illinois Heartland Library System.

OCLC WorldCat/FirstSearch and SILC, the Statewide Illinois Library Catalog, will continue to be available in FY12. The Illinois State Library is once again providing these resources for all Illinois libraries.

Please contact Suzanne Schriar, 217-785-1533, sschriar@ilsos.net, with any questions.
