When libraries are preparing ILL requests, they frequently want to know the ILL policy of the lending libraries. Or when a patron is considering reciprocal borrowing, they want to know what restrictions they might face. Now this information can be easily accessed through your LibraryLearning (L2) account.

The new ILLINET Resource Sharing Policy Directory is pleased to join the statewide CE Calendar and ELI library data as part of L2. The directory is now online and waiting for libraries to enter their ILL and other Resource Sharing data. The Resource Sharing Directory includes Interlibrary Loan, Photocopy, and Reciprocal Borrowing policies. As an added feature, libraries have the capability to upload their written ILL Borrowing and ILL Lending policies to the directory.

A short PowerPoint presentation covers creating an L2 account for those without an L2 and signing in to L2 to enter Interlibrary Loan, Photocopy, and Reciprocal Borrowing policies. Please view the presentation to learn how enter policies for your library into L2.

Once libraries have begun to enter their policies into L2 the real fun begins for OCLC libraries as we create truly powerful custom holdings groups and paths to use in WorldCat. Photocopy policies include LVIS participation to enable libraries to identify other LVIS libraries in order to secure free photocopies. Reciprocal Borrowing policies include a description of any limits imposed on RB patrons, thereby enabling libraries to view Reciprocal Borrowing policies before their patrons visit neighboring institutions.

One of the goals of the WorldCat Local Illinois pilot (the “Statewide Discovery Toolkit” LSTA grant project) is to examine how a home delivery option might be received in Illinois.

To evaluate this service, the Illinois WorldCat pilot will be conducting a three month test of home delivery with OCLC’s WorldCat Direct program, an interlibrary loan service for libraries that wish to offer rapid delivery of books to their patrons. The pilot is designed to analyze the impact and interest of direct delivery with libraries and library users and to evaluate customer satisfaction with the service.

Patrons, from participating pilot libraries, who wish to try the WorldCat Direct option will begin the process by requesting a title through the WorldCat Resource Sharing interface. If the book is available in its inventory, the supplier for this pilot program (Better World Books), will then mail the book directly to the patron’s home address. Later, the patron either returns the book by mail using a prepaid envelope or buys the book directly from the supplier.

Because books are mailed directly to patrons, borrowing libraries save staff time processing requests which can be handled by this service. Delivery tends to be faster than traditional interlibrary loan since the book supplier guarantees a response to ILL requests within 2 days and mails books directly to patrons. The longer loan period of 30 days on all materials also makes this an exciting new option for resource sharing.

Beginning July, 1, 2008, the following libraries will be testing the WorldCat Direct service:

Champaign Public Library

Des Plaines Public Library

Edwardsville Public Library

Hoopeston Public Library

Lewis & Clark Library System

Lincoln Library

Lincoln Trail Libraries System

University of Illinois @ Chicago

University of Illinois @ Springfield

For more information about this project, contact WorldCat Local Project Coordinator Laurie Bartolini.

On January 2, the new ILDS (Illinois Library Delivery Service) will begin for the 100 plus academic libraries who belong to the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), the nine regional library systems, Chicago Public Library and the Illinois State Library. To prepare for the changeover, each library system is holding training sessions to explain changes to each member library.

Also to prepare for the changeover, on December 28th (or if you are going to be closed before the 28th), every library in the state needs to destroy all current ILDS (Intersystems Library Delivery Service) labels. The last “old” ILDS pickup will occur on Thursday December 27th. Non-ILDS libraries should continue to use their regional library system labels.
For those who will be taking part in the new ILDS, on January 2 your new ILDS code will appear in Every Library in ILLINET (<a href="http://eliillinois.org/"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/eliillinois.org');">ELI).

As soon as appropriate changes are made, the ILLINET directory that appears on the Illinois State Library web site will be updated with the new statewide ILDS codes. See what the <a href="http://www.illinoisdelivers.net/PaperILDSlabel.pdf"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.illinoisdelivers.net');">new ILDS label looks like on the new Illinois Delivers <a href="http://www.illinoisdelivers.net"target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.illinoisdelivers.net');">web site.
