The ILA Marketing Committee is starting a new video offering, Modcasts. The first Modcast is up at the Marketing Committee’s Youtube channel.
These marketing vodcasts, “Modcasts,” will mostly feature aspects of marketing libraries to highlight all kinds of interesting trends, handy resources and stories. This first short video introduces The Field Museum Team who will energize and educate pilot advocates at the Oct. 22 Workshop in preparation for our exciting Go Green @ Your Illinois Library project where Illinois libraries will impact the future of Illinois in a new and greener way.
Look for several ISL related presentations at next week’s Illinois Library Association Annual Conference at Navy Pier in Chicago.

After nearly a year of work by dozens of ILA members, a blueprint for addressing the changing environment for regional and statewide cooperation was reviewed and adopted by the ILA Executive Committee on behalf of the full board on August 27, 2010. Please read the draft plan here.
The plan, developed with input from more than seventy representatives of the Illinois library community who attended a summit meeting in the fall of 2009, has also been presented to the Illinois State Library, the Illinois State Library Advisory Committee, and related library
organizations.
Throughout September, it is being presented to organizations such as the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois, Illinois Chapter of the Special Libraries Association, Illinois School Library Media Association, and the Library Administrator’s Council of Northern Illinois, with the final presentation to the Illinois library community at the ILA Membership Meeting, Wednesday, September 29, 11:45-12:30, Grand Ballroom, Navy Pier.
After soliciting the opinions of all of these groups, the plan will be presented this Fall to Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White with specific recommendations for immediate action.
Looking for a job or polishing your resume? This year’s ILA Annual Conference will include a resume review clinic. The Career Clinic will be located in the Exhibit Hall on Wednesday, September 29 from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and on Thursday, September 30 from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Candidates will receive free advice on how they can improve their resumes from librarians who have experience with the hiring process. Each session will be 25 minutes long.
Those who are not attending the Annual Conference, but wish to participate in the Career Clinic can obtain a complimentary exhibits pass. Showcasing more than 150 companies demonstrating and displaying a wide array of products and services, the Exhibit Hall also features a number of open food functions for pass holders and conference attendees to enjoy.
In addition, everyone is invited to participate in a special Passport to Prizes program. Collect stamps from all the participating exhibitors, submit the passport by 1:15 p.m. on September 30, and be eligible to win fabulous prizes! The drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m., during the exhibits closing reception, and you must be present to win.

“Libraries Out Loud” is the theme for the 2010 Illinois Library Association Annual Conference to be held at Navy Pier in Chicago September 28-30. Program proposals are being sought from all types of libraries and agencies with which they interact – for example, a municipality, a school, a corporation or a university. Organizers are placing emphasis on programs that highlight partnerships — whether those partnerships exist between libraries or with community organizations such as park districts or chambers of commerce. Program proposals are due by January 11, 2010. The call for proposals can be viewed at the ILA website.
All presenters (librarians and any non-library partners) are entitled to a single day registration to the conference as a thank you for their efforts. Join the library community at Navy Pier September 28-30, 2010 and let your voice be heard!

New Illinois School Board of Education Rules
ILA and the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA) are requesting the Illinois library community to urge the Illinois School Board of Education (ISBE) to support the new rules that require all students to have access to library media programs and staffed by certified library information specialists. ISBE is currently accepting public comments via e-mail rules@isbe.net or mail to Sally Vogl, Agency Rules Coordinator, ISBE, 100 North First Street – S – 493, Springfield, IL 62777-0001. Comments are due by December 24.
The new rules emphasize that school library media programs are essential to student achievement as shown in Powerful Libraries Make Powerful Learners: The Illinois Study and confirmed by studies done in sixteen other states.
The rules are in agreement with the July 28, 2005, “Section 1.755 Requirements for Library Information Specialists,” which states that no one can be assigned to provide library media services unless certified.
Opposition launched by the Illinois Statewide School Management Alliance (ISSMA)* contends that the new rules are an unfunded mandate and that the state board does not have the authority to require certified staff in school libraries. In an ISSMA memo to their membership, school libraries are described as a “luxury” item.
* In the spring of 1993, the executive directors of the four statewide educational management associations — Illinois Association of School Administrators, Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Association of School Business Officials and Illinois Principals Association — solidified discussions concerning joint legislative efforts and formed the Illinois Statewide School Management Alliance.
