Final Week for Try-it! Illinois

Try-It! Illinois, the Illinois State Library’s free 13th annual statewide electronic database trial, is underway through November 30. Try-It! Illinois offers the staffs and library users of the more than 5,000 ILLINET member libraries the opportunity to survey and evaluate a wide variety of electronic resources.

Log on to http://finditillinois.org/tryit/ for information on obtaining a login and password (right-hand column) and to see a list of this year’s databases and participating vendors.

Illinois Digital Archives

As Veterans Day approaches, you are encouraged to read the stories of our state’s veterans in the Illinois Veterans’ History Project. Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White created the project to provide a permanent repository for the memories of the men and women who have served our nation. Log on to the Illinois Digital Archives to view their recollections.

Try-It! Illinois Returns

The Illinois State Library has announced the 12th annual Try-It! Illinois. The statewide database trial will be available October 1 through November 30, 2011.

Try-It! Illinois offers the staffs and library users of the more than 5,000 ILLINET member libraries the opportunity to survey and evaluate a wide variety of electronic resources. Thanks to partnerships between the Illinois State Library and the participating electronic resource vendors, there is no charge for accessing these databases during Try-It! Illinois.

You will need a login and password to access Try-it! Illinois. Libraries are encouraged to share the Try-It! Illinois login and password with their library users, and provide them an opportunity to use and recommend electronic resources for possible purchase at the local level.

Please do not post the Try-It! Illinois login and password on the Internet or in publicly archived electronic newsletters. This is vital to the success of the trial and to maintaining the relationships that have been established with vendors.

Illinois Digital Archives

To highlight the start of autumn, check out the collection of original watercolor paintings of autumn leaves by Ellen Robbins.  This collection is from the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Lenhardt Library and provides images of Robbins’ eighteen original watercolor paintings, ca. 1868. Try-it! Illinois Trial Period

This fall the Illinois State Library will again offer the highly acclaimed service Try-It! Illinois to Illinois librarians and their users. Try-It! Illinois introduces Illinois librarians, staffs and patrons to a variety of electronic databases. These free resources will be offered through the State Library during the trial period from October 1 to November 30.

Vendors wishing to be included should contact Gwen Harrison no later than Friday, September 16. Potential new vendors must create a login and password to participate in the trial, and should email Gwen at gharrison@ilsos.net or call her at 217-785-7334.
