Literacy Spotlight: Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley

This week the Illinois State Library spotlights Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley of St. Charles.

A few years ago, this adult learner enrolled in the literacy program at Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley because he spoke poor English. Now, he speaks English perfectly and reads at the 12th-grade level. In fact, his English speaking skills have improved so much that when his supervisor quit, he was offered the job.

The man worried about taking the job because of his English and his existing relationship with co-workers. His tutor told him that if his American boss did not think his English was acceptable, they would not have offered him the job. In addition to accepting the new job, this adult learner has made great strides in learning English, his self-confidence has improved, and his stress levels have diminished. This literacy program has made a profound difference in his life.
