Literacy Spotlight: Albany Park Community Center

This week the Illinois State Library spotlights the Albany Park Community Center in Chicago.

Hoping to earn a GED, this adult learner registered for classes at Albany Park Community Center. He was unable to complete high school in his native country before immigrating to the United States. When tested for his reading level, he scored far below the level needed to study for the GED. The man was matched with a tutor and worked diligently during twice a week sessions. Tutor and student focused on fluency and comprehension of the English language.

In just a few months, the student was able to transition from tutoring to an Adult Basic Education class. His fluency and comprehension are now areas of strength for him. While working full-time to support his family of five, he plans to continue working toward his GED and eventually attend college.
