Literacy Spotlight: Dominican Literacy Center

By WJIL Project Team | October 26th, 2009 | Comment?

Several students at the Dominican Literacy Center in Melrose Park have participated in group classes at other nearby literacy programs, but they now attend classes at the Dominican Literacy Center because they offer one-to-one instruction and individual attention.

At registration, one adult learner said she had attended group classes at another literacy program for almost two years. She believed she had learned a great deal but due to an extreme lack of confidence, she barely said a word in class. With the warm and encouraging guidance of her tutor, this adult learner now reads stories to her son’s 2nd grade class and gave a wonderful presentation at the North Side Literacy Coalition’s Night of a Thousand Stars event last May.
