Literacy Spotlight: Spotlight on Achievement Awards, Oscar Ruiz

By WJIL Project Team | July 27th, 2009 | Comment?

Oscar, a student at Instituto del Progreso Latino in Chicago who is a native of Mexico, only attended school in Mexico until the 4th grade. When he came to the United States, Oscar had a desire for learning. He began taking classes at Instituto several months ago. Because his work schedule made it difficult to attend school every day, he changed his work hours.

Oscar’s goal is to obtain the G.E.D, and with the help of dedicated teachers, he will achieve that goal. But in the meantime, he is improving his Spanish, learning English and continuing his elementary education. Oscar is a very dedicated and fast learner. A busload of his classmates from Instituto del Progreso Latino of Chicago joined Oscar at the Spotlight ceremony to see him receive his award.
