Literacy Spotlight: Spotlight On Achievement Awards – Ron Draper

By WJIL Project Team | July 13th, 2009 | Comment?

Ron, a student at the YWCA Adult Literacy Program,  has been in and out of adult education programs for many years. But this time he has a greater motivation to succeed. Ron is a widower raising his stepson. He sees in his stepson similar learning difficulties to those he experienced. Ron wants to help his stepson with homework so that the youngster doesn’t end up in a special education program like Ron did.

Ron has successfully held a good job and raised two families with only a special education certificate, but now Ron wants to make a better life for himself and his stepson. Ron wants to improve his reading and writing skills to obtain a better job with the lumber company where he currently works as a truck driver. When he had to renew his driver’s license, Ron had to pass several tests to keep his job as a truck driver. Unfortunately, he did not pass all the tests and lost his job.

His tutor worked with him and when Ron retook the test, he passed and was back on the job within a week. In the short time he has been working with a tutor, Ron has read his first full-length novel, his own mail and his newspaper.
