Copyright: A Concern for All Libraries

  • Librarians in all types of libraries face copyright issues and problems daily. Copyright is not limited to just public or academic libraries, it affects all libraries and all individuals. Click on the link agove to read more about the Action Steps for Copyright Compliancy and take a look at a lighthearted YouTube video – A “Fair(y) Use Tale,” browse the materials in the “Key Resoures” area for academic, public, school and special libraries, then learn more by enrolling in one of the free related online courses listed below in the Courses and Learning section.

Athens Regional Library Outreach Success Story: In Depth Webinar Archive

  • Learn about the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center from guest speakers Kathryn Ames, Director of the Athens Regional Library System and Miguel Vicente, Manager of the Pinewoods Library and Learning Center. They will discuss the project design and implementation of this successful multi-year IMLS grant designed to improve the educational level of the immigrants, increase use of library and arts center facilities by the Mexican-American community; and provide opportunities for educational and cultural exchange. The project won the PLA’s 2007 Highsmith Library Innovation Award

Courses and Learning

Copyright Basics for Libraries

  • Copyright is a hot topic in libraries. While the library and academic communities once felt that they had a good grasp on legal and ethical use of protected materials, recent changes in law and important court cases, as well as aggressive legal actions, have put librarians on edge. This short (1 1/2 hour) online module can help you learn more about what you need to know.

Copyright Issues in the Classroom and School Library

  • Knowing what copyright entails and how to deal with the most basic copyright situations in a school library can help a library avoid the more common copyright risks. This tutorial doesn’t purport to cover every possible copyright situation in a library. With this foundation you will be able to better understand what you read regarding copyright and make decisions that are based on solid baseline information, not rumor or possibly erroneous “common knowledge.”

NOTE: These 2 UNT courses are not effected by the course enrollment and completion deadlines currently in effect during the WJIL Course Catalog transition.
