Success in Diversity: How Three Illinois Libraries Embrace Multiculturalism

The Illinois State Library’s Diversity Program is proud to be featured in an article in the October 2007 ILA Reporter published by the Illinois Library Association.  The article entitled Success In Diversity: How Three Illinois Libraries Embrace Multiculturalism, examines the uniqueness of a diversity program at a special library in Illinois. Some key points from the article are the Tips for Success in Diversity for Multi-type Libraries which include:

  1. Setting goals
  2. Involving others
  3. Training staff to relate to and work with diverse communities
  4. Employing minority and special interest library workforce
  5. Planning to celebrate diversity, heritage, and culture; Involving local schools
  6. Inclusion of diverse populations in planning, trustees, and on committees
  7. Partnering with local cultural organizations
  8. Engaging local businesses
  9. Staying creative
  10. Evaluating programming and involvement, with input from library staff and community members.
